More Harmful Additives You Should Avoid

Following on from yesterday’s post, here are more harmful additives that you should try to avoid:

  1. Calcium benzoate (E213) – a preservative found in many foods, including drinks, low-sugar products and cereals.  E213 can inhibit digestive enzyme function and should especially be avoided by people with hay fever, hives and asthma.
  2. Calcium sulphite (E226) – a preservative used widely that makes old produce appear fresh.  Commonly found in frozen vegetables, sauces, burgers and even biscuits, E226 can cause bronchial problems, low-blood pressure and anaphyactic shock.
  3. Monosodium glutamate (E621) – commonly associated with Chinese takeaway food, E621 is actually used widely as a flavour enhancer, and can lead to seizures, chest pains, headache and nausea.
  4. Potassium nitrate (E249) – used as a preservative in meat products, E249 may lower the blood’s oxygen capacity and form carcinogenic nitrosamines.
  5. Stannous chloride (E512) – this antioxidant is a form of tin found in canned foods and fruit juices, and if ingested in high concentrations can cause acute poisoning.

Look out for these additives when you are out food shopping – this knowledge can help you protect your family’s health.
